The City of Johnson City, Tennessee is accepting online applications for a Trades Inspector I on the Planning and Development Services department. The employee performs responsible technical work inspecting buildings for compliance with building codes and zoning ordinances; does related work as required.Under general supervision conducts independent inspection of buildings under construction to ensure compliance with the adopted building code, municipal zoning ordinances and technical standards. Supervision is received through verbal and written instructions and work is reviewed through reports submitted and occasional re-inspection, all to be under the direction of a supervisor. General knowledge of the materials, methods and practices used in building construction, and of all stages of construction; some knowledge of legal procedures as related to the enforcement of building codes and municipal ordinances; ability to recognize faulty construction or hazardous conditions created by deterioration and to recommend effective corrective measures; ability to read and interpret building construction plans and specifications and to recognize deviations from such plans in the construction process; ability to enforce codes and regulations firmly, tactfully and impartially; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with contractors, property owners, representatives from other agencies and the public; ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, verbally and in writing.
Acceptable Experience and Training: completion of high school and considerable experience in a construction trade at the journeyman level; possession of appropriate certifications is desired. Employee shall obtain a minimum of (3) appropriate inspector certifications dictated by departmental needs and the Chief Building Official. At minimum, (1) certification must be obtained every (6) months for the first (18) months from the date of hire. The Building Division's expectation is that every Trades Inspector I attempts to reach the level of Trades Inspector III, in order to provide the highest level of customer service possible to those who choose to build in the City of Johnson City; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
